2019 – 2024
Losing the game, and finding it again.
01 · After Scotland
2018 was his best season yet. Then it went the wrong way. He moved to Los Angeles and worked with the wrong coach, and when COVID arrived he was isolated, with almost nowhere to compete.
02 · The yips
Fear crept into his game. The yips came, his confidence went with them and his scores ballooned. With no sponsor and no backing, every tournament meant paying the bills, not just the chance to win. At the end of 2023 he walked away from golf. Under all that pressure he had forgotten why he played.
03 · The work
What followed was work on the person, not the swing: SEAL Fit, meditation retreats, rebuilding his health, and long conversations with his brother Mukhtar, a sports consultant, to get to the source of the yips.
04 · Now
The yips are gone. He plays with the pure love of the game he had as a child. His family now shares the financial weight through their businesses, and Mukhtar takes care of much of the rest, so Nurtai can keep it simple and focus on what matters.
